COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is designed as an introduction to business in Canada. We start with a step by step guide to producing your own business plan. We follow that with a guide to exporting a product to another country. Along the way we touch on a variety of topics including: business writing, meeting skills, negotiation skills, presentation skills and business culture sensitivity. We also learn to make effective cover-letters and resumes. There is a heavy emphasis on perfecting your presentation and public speaking skills throughout the intensive two months.

This is a two-month course designed to improve a student's ability to communicate in an English business environment. And while this course is designed to help international (ESL) students who have limited business experience develop practical communication skills within a business environment, equal emphasis is placed on developing practical communication skills as well as on the concepts that lie behind practical business vocabulary.

Specifically, in addition to the assigned textbook, the course utilizes a number of government and industry material and sources to explore such basic business concepts as entrepreneurship, marketing, retail, franchising, recruitment, as well as many challenges associated with international business.

In addition to being introduced to a rich vocabulary, students are able to develop their reading, listening, writing, research and analytical skills. Presentation skills will also be developed through an in-depth process and extensive coaching. As a complement, we will also emphasize the development of practical communication skills in the form of resume and cover letter writing, proposals, meetings, business reports and various forms of business letters and memos. Ultimately this course is designed to be instructive, friendly and fun!
